Apple announced new iPhones on Tuesday evening.

During the presentation, the company showed a series of innovations for the iPhone 13, but some things also remained underexposed.

We list them in this article.

Focus and macro

In the announcement of the new iPhones, Apple discussed possibilities for recording videos.

One of the innovations in the iPhone 13 is a 'cinematic mode'.

This allows the iPhone to automatically focus on the most important subject in the frame.

For example, if something happens in the background, the foreground will be blurred.

Shifting the focus can also be done manually.

The mode only works with a maximum video resolution of 1080p and thirty frames per second.

The cameras of the iPhone 13 Pro have been expanded with options for macro photography via the wide-angle lens.

This allows subjects up to a distance of 2 centimeters to be brought into sharp focus.

The function will be available not only for photography, but also for recording videos.

With a macro video, you can also create slow-motion images and timelapses.

1 terabyte of storage on Pro models

The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max are now also available with 1 TB of internal storage.

On the regular iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 mini, people don't have that choice.

There, 512 GB is the largest version.

The phones start with 128 GB of storage.

Notch takes smaller bite out of the screen

To unlock the phone, Apple again uses its facial scanner Face ID.

Necessary sensors are placed in a notch at the top of the screen.

In the iPhone 13, Apple says that notch is 20 percent narrower than in older iPhones, leaving more usable screen space.

MacRumors

reports that the notch has become a bit longer.

iPhone 13 is slightly thicker and heavier

All new iPhones are slightly thicker and heavier than the iPhone 12 models.

The iPhone 13 devices are 0.25 millimeters thicker than their predecessors.

These are the differences in weight:

  • iPhone 12 mini (135 grams) - iPhone 13 mini (141 grams)

  • iPhone 12 (164 grams) - iPhone 13 (174 grams)

  • iPhone 12 Pro (189 grams) - iPhone 13 Pro (204 grams)

  • iPhone 12 Pro Max (228 grams) - iPhone 13 Pro Max (240 grams)

Bigger battery should last longer

The new iPhones should last longer on a full battery charge, Apple promised on Thursday.

That would be due to a combination of factors: a larger battery (how much mAh is not yet known), iOS 15 and the new A15 Bionic chip, with which software should work more energy-efficiently.

On average, the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro Max should last up to 2.5 hours longer per battery charge than the iPhone 12 and 12 Pro Max. For the iPhone 13 mini and the iPhone 13 Pro, Apple expects an improvement of 1.5 hours compared to their predecessors. Whether this is also the case in practice remains to be seen.
