Apple
released an update on Monday that corrects a weakness in its operating system that researchers say was exploited by
Pegasus spyware
from an Israeli firm.
The
NSO Group
is in the eye of the storm following an international media investigation that determined that its Pegasus software was used to spy on the phones of human rights activists, journalists and even heads of state.
Apple and cybersecurity experts on Monday urged owners of iPhones and other iOS-powered devices to install the software update.
Researchers from
Citizen Lab
, a cyber surveillance organization in Canada, found the problem while analyzing the phone of a Saudi activist who had been infected with NSO Group's Pegasus spyware.
"We determined that the spyware mercenary company NSO Group used the vulnerability to remotely exploit and infect the latest Apple devices with Pegasus spyware," Citizen Lab wrote in a post.
He added that in March he examined the activist's phone and determined that it had been hacked with the Pegasus spyware through the text messaging software iMessage.
"Apple is aware of a report that claims that
this problem may have been actively exploited
," the tech giant said in a post about the security update.
Citizen Lab said they believe the hack was the work of the NSO Group.
"Selling technology to governments that will use it recklessly, in violation of international human rights laws, ultimately facilitates the discovery of spyware by surveillance organizations, as we and others have repeatedly demonstrated and as was the case again this time, "said Citizen Lab.
