Since the fourth pandemic of Corona, the number of severe cases and deaths is increasing rapidly. It is time to focus on the management of high-risk groups among the elderly and young adults, as the number of severe cases is the highest among those in their 40s and 50s, and the death toll is highest among those aged 60 and over.

This is Cho Dong-chan, a medical reporter.

Mr. Park, in his 40s, was diagnosed with Corona 19 last month.

Before being assigned to a living treatment center, his condition deteriorated rapidly and he was classified as a critically ill patient.

[Severely ill patient in their 40s: On the way to Seoul, the fever gradually increased, and breathing became a little difficult, so I went to the Seoul National Medical Center (directly).]

Even if a healthy person falls into a serious condition, he gets better if he receives initial oxygen treatment. I did.

[Severely severe patient in their 40s: (hospital treatment) When I woke up in the morning after about 5 days, I was really back to my usual state. Blood pressure, pulse, everything was normal.]

These are the results of analysis for the last 5 weeks after the 4th pandemic started.

The total number of patients was the most in their 20s and 30s, and the number of severe cases in their 40s and 50s was different from the third epidemic, but the death toll was the highest among those aged 60 and over, as in the third epidemic.

In terms of whether or not they were vaccinated, those who were not vaccinated accounted for the most at 91.3% of the severe cases and deaths, 8.1% of those who received the first dose, and only 0.6% of those who completed vaccination.

The first dose alone seems to be quite effective in preventing gastritis and death.

However, it varies by age group.

Among those under the age of 60, only 1.2% of the patients with gastritis and those who died had the first dose, but 14.6% of those over the age of 60, a more than tenfold increase.

This means that the second dose of the high-risk elderly people should be given quickly.

[Bang Bang-hwan / National Medical Center Central Clinical Committee: If you get the vaccine only once, the effect is a bit weak, and it is better to get it twice, but high-risk groups need to get the second vaccination a little sooner.]

Among the young adults under 50, diabetes, obesity, asthma The risk is high if you have an underlying medical condition.

There are more medical personnel assigned to one critically ill patient than ten mildly ill patients.

Reducing the number of critically ill patients allows the health care system to function properly.
