Ses Madones de sa Llata

, Mallorcan artisans who work palm hearts like no one else.

Araceli Iranzo

, a publicist who left Madrid to find another way of life on the Balearic island, learned about his story at the Museo de la Llata de Capdepera.

"I began to investigate. With a single material, the palm heart, they did real wonders and their work was falling into oblivion

."

In this new life that I was looking for away from the asphalt, this philosophy of the beauty of simplicity fitted in perfectly.

"

Knowing the history, seeing how they worked laboriously in a circle ...

It was a real crush». And in six months Antic Mallorca (and its bags) was born. In 2009 the project started. "I was surprised by how open-minded they were, despite at the age they were. "The oldest of the group is 92 years old and the average is around 80. Araceli designed and put the colors and they were telling her what could be done and what not.

A model holds the Antic Mallorca 'Medusa' tote bag.

"

Making one of these bags takes between 20 and 30 hours

. Production is very limited; we make about ten per month," he explains. They work to order. "They last a lifetime, yes."

Orders come from Japan, USA. , Costa Rica and China

. "They are exclusive creations, after all." In a few days, they begin to collect the hearts of palm. "We dry them during the summer to bleach them." What they collect now will be what they work with in winter. "We do the whole process ourselves."

Now the Antic Mallorca team is made up of seven artisans, between veterans and new hires.

"In 2018 we launched the llata school, where we train new artisans, so that these techniques are not lost

. More than 1002 have already passed. Three years ago, they started with

sales

. And they have just landed in the shop of the Royal Botanical Garden of Madrid

The madonnas of sa Llata
