(Financial World) Core shortage affects Tesla's production of Musk and "names" two suppliers

China News Service, Beijing, August 20 (Reporter Liu Liang) Recently, Tesla CEO Elon Musk said on social media that Tesla production was affected, mainly due to two automotive chips from Renesas and Bosch. Supplier’s supply impact.

There are many chip manufacturers. Why do these two receive extra attention?

Chip supplier supply issues are affecting Tesla production

The impact of chip shortages on the production of automakers continues.

Recently, Musk said on Twitter: "Tesla is operating under extreme restrictions on the supply chain of certain'standard' automotive chips. So far, the most problematic suppliers are Renesas and Bosch."

The implication is that Tesla's production is being constrained by two automotive chip suppliers.

In fact, Tesla's "encounter" is not an isolated case.

In mid-March this year, automotive chip manufacturer Renesas’ Naka chip factory at its headquarters in Japan stopped production due to a fire. The capacity loss during this period made the already tight automotive chip market worse, and Ford, Toyota, and Continental were affected to varying degrees.

Industry analysts believe that the fire in the Renesas chip factory has delayed the chip supply of automakers, and it is expected that the global allocation of goods after the recovery of production capacity will take a certain amount of time.

Superimposed on the extreme cold weather in Texas at that time, many chip factories were closed, making the global automotive chip shortage situation even more severe.

In addition to Renesas, previous supplier Bosch also faced challenges brought about by semiconductor shortages.

In order to increase chip production capacity, in June this year, Bosch invested about 1 billion euros to establish a fab in Dresden, Germany, mainly for the production of automotive chips.

The person in charge of Bosch said that the new fab has been put into operation at present, but it still cannot solve the overall shortage of chips caused by various reasons in a short period of time.

Renesas is the world's top automotive chip manufacturer.

Bosch is a German industrial giant. Its Dresden wafer fab is one of the most advanced chip factories in the world. The location of the plant, Saxony, is also the largest in Europe and the fifth largest micro-electromechanical base in the world. One of the European chips is produced here.

Tesla's July sales in China encountered a rare "Waterloo"

Not only did the chip supply encounter obstacles, Tesla's sales in China also encountered a rare "Waterloo".

According to data released by the Passenger Car Market Information Joint Conference recently, Tesla's sales in China in July were only 8,621 vehicles, a decrease of nearly 70% from June.

Regarding the decline in sales in China, Musk did not forget to explain to the two suppliers on Twitter: “The cars produced by Tesla’s Shanghai plant in the first half of the season are mainly for export, and only for the local area in the second half of the season. Market sales."

In addition to the reduction in sales caused by the transition to export, according to industry analysts, it is also related to a series of incidents such as the previous "brake door".

In April of this year, some car owners defended their rights at the Shanghai Auto Show due to the failure of Tesla's vehicle brakes, pushing Tesla to the forefront.

Soon after, in June, Tesla was once again involved in the "recording gate" and was accused of sudden slowdown of Model X when driving on high speeds.

Two incidents plunged Tesla into a storm of public opinion.

In addition, China's new car-making forces have also brought market share pressure to Tesla.

In July, the sales of Weilai, Ideal, Xiaopeng and other auto companies increased strongly, reaching the 8,000 mark, approaching Tesla's sales.

It is reported that Tesla announced at the end of July that it has lowered the price of Model 3, and industry insiders believe that part of the reason for this price reduction is due to market competition pressure.

Although Tesla's sales in China declined significantly in July, the export situation was outstanding.

Data show that in July, Tesla's wholesale sales in China were 32,968. After deducting sales in China, Tesla China exported 24,347 vehicles, an increase of 385% from the previous month.

The sales volume is significantly higher than the export sales of new energy vehicles from automakers such as SAIC Passenger Cars, BYD and Chery.
