<Anchor> Some of

you may feel that mosquitoes are less visible this summer, because of the long heatwave that even mosquitoes cannot withstand. Instead, the forecast is for mosquitoes to be rampant in the coming fall.

Why is this, reporter Lee Ho-gun covered it.

A residential area in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul.

Mosquito control is in full swing at roadside drains and playgrounds.

Even though there are many bushes, mosquitoes are hardly visible.

[Seo Deok-chang/Chairman of Saemaeul Leaders Association, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul: There were a lot of them near the sewers or septic tanks, but the mosquitoes seem to have decreased this year.]

Other places have a similar reaction.

[Seoul Gangnam-gu Office Quarantine Agent: (Did mosquitoes come out when the manhole was opened?) A lot. (How was this year?) I don't know if it's because it's a hot day, but I think it's less than usual.]

[Hyung-eun Lee·Song-i Kim/ Yangcheon-gu, Seoul: Children definitely get bitten less… (By the way, I never smoked mosquito repellent at home. Not even this year.) Me too. At home.] In

fact, the number of mosquitoes has been greatly reduced.

According to a survey by the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the number of mosquitoes nationwide this summer has decreased significantly to less than half last year and a quarter of the normal year.

The cause is a long heatwave.

This is because the puddle water evaporated from the burning sun, making it difficult for larvae to reproduce, and adult mosquitoes, whose body temperature changes depending on the ambient temperature, do not live long when the temperature exceeds 32 degrees Celsius.

[Lee Dong-gyu/Professor of Department of Environmental Health, Kosin University: Even those who have them do not actively engage in blood-sucking activities. I'm in a shady place, sitting still, I'm not

active

.] The

temperature at which mosquitoes move most actively is around 27 degrees.

So this year, it is predicted that mosquitoes will be at their peak in the fall when it gets cooler.

[Wonwoo Seo/Cleaning Administration Department, Gangnam-gu Office, Seoul: We plan to continue carrying out mosquito prevention business when cleaning all septic tanks until late autumn.]

Meanwhile, the health authorities issued a Japanese encephalitis alert nationwide on the 5th, two weeks later than last year.
