After the billionaires (not astronauts), it was logical that the next step in the commercial exploitation of space travel would be to display advertising.

It seems that the first to try will be

Space X, the aerospace company owned by Elon Musk

.

According to Business Insider, the Canadian startup

Geometric Energy Corporation

(GEC) has reached an agreement with Space X to show ads on a satellite.

The company, according to its own CEO, Samuel Reid, is in the process of building

a satellite called CubeSat whose sides would be covered with screens

that would display advertisements, logos and art to advertise from space.

Reid was a teacher for Musk's sons at the Ad Astra billionaire school and, while he says he has never spoken in person with him, this detail was key to closing the deal.

Once the satellite is in orbit, a 'selfie stick' attached to the side of it will record the screen and send the signal over the Internet to be able to broadcast the advertising on YouTube and Twitch.

In other words, what this company sells is not advertising in the sky or space, but

a recording of the satellite screen

.

According to Reid, his plan is to launch the first CubeSat in early 2022 and, here is the twist,

advertising can only be bought using tokens in exchange for cryptocurrencies such

as Ethereum, although his goal is to be able to make payments with the infamous DogeCoin, the controversial cryptocurrency promoted by Elon Musk and that it is not very clear yet if it is a joke or not.

"I'm trying to get something that can democratize access to space and decentralize participation," says Reid.

"

Hopefully, people won't waste their money on something inappropriate, insulting, or offensive

."

However, the company has not yet disclosed how much each token of the five it sells would cost (based on the position or screen brightness of each pixel purchased).

Criticism for this new way of selling advertising has not been long in coming

.

The news has dragged thousands of Twitter users, who consider it an outrage that the sky is used for these purposes despite the fact that, on paper, the satellite would not be visible in any way with the naked eye and the ads could only be seen by its broadcast on YouTube or Twitch.

So far, Musk's fury over the use of satellites had been limited to the astronomical community around the world.

Starlink, another Musk company, is designed to launch communications satellites, has generated many protests because its brightness is so high that it can harm the precision of instruments or simply spoil a snapshot taken from Earth.
