• Menorca, the most desired national destination

The Greek islands are the most desired place to spend the holidays this year.

According to a macro-survey carried out by Lonely Planet Spain on Instagram (@lonelyplanet_es), the destination has won by a landslide, with almost 80% of the votes of the more than 110,000 users of this social network in Spain who have participated in the survey from the travel guide editor.

The second position was also occupied by an island: Sardinia.

Participants had to vote among a selection of 22 European cities, regions and islands and choose their favorites in a competition based on eliminations: round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals ... Copenhagen, Rome, Sicily, Berlin, Amsterdam, Dubrovnik, Corsica or the Côte d'Azur were some of the places to choose from.

In third and fourth place, travelers voted for

Dubrovnic

, while in fourth place were

Florence and Tuscany

.

The results indicate that travelers have mainly opted for Mediterranean destinations, compared to places and regions in the north or Central Europe and even very classic cities such as Venice or Paris.

Dream islands

There are more than 3,000 Greek islands scattered throughout the Ionian, Mediterranean and Aegean seas, each one more beautiful than the other.

Crystal clear turquoise waters, beaches of fine golden sand, paradisiacal coves, urban centers on the slopes of impossible mountains, ancestral monumental heritage, delicious gastronomy and lively places of leisure are the letter of introduction of each one of them, a

vacation

mecca

for tourists who, sometimes, they find it difficult to choose one to stay in.

Mykonos.

There is something for all tastes, from the ones closest to the Athenian port for a day trip, to the one to lose yourself in for several weeks, the busiest in the Mediterranean, the most touristy or the most tropical of all with lush green forests.

Here are some of the Greek islands that never disappoint (to enter Greece you need a Covid vaccination certificate or a negative test).

Hydra, Poros and Aegina

They are the closest to the continent.

Day cruises depart from the Athenian port of

Piraeus

and tour the three islands on a twelve-hour excursion that includes a buffet on board.

Poros

, the island of Poseidon, god of the Sea, is the smallest of the three;

Hidra

, a former refuge for saronic pirates, stands out for its picturesque steep alleys flanked by mansions;

and

Aegina

is one of the first maritime and commercial cities of Ancient Greece, and the first city to mint money.

It stands out for its famous temple of Afaya, one of the three temples in the sacred triangle also formed by the Parthenon, in Athens, and that of Poseidon, on Cape Sounion.

Mykonos and Santorini

They are probably the two most famous and visited Greek islands, belonging to the Cyclades.

Mykonos

, considered the Greek Ibiza, is the island that never sleeps, popular with those looking for fun and pristine beaches.

Among the nightspots on the beaches and quiet taverns there are a large number of design hotels and exclusive villas with pools, as well as luxury shops.

Through the cobbled streets of its historic center you can reach the monument to the Greek heroine Manto Mavrogenous, the essential windmills, the Chora castle or the Alefkandra district, also called "Little Venice".

Santorini.

Halfway between Athens and Crete is

Santorini

, a jewel with a caldera in the center, the result of a volcanic eruption that occurred 10,000 years ago.

It is known for the spectacular panoramic views of the Mediterranean from the terraces of the characteristic white houses perched on the mountainside.

It has numerous beaches of all colors: shiny black edges, white, black and red sand ... Among the landscape of white houses and the sea, the blue domes of the town's Orthodox churches stand out.

The sunset over the beach of Oia is unforgettable.

Both Mykonos and Santorini have direct flights from Madrid.

Corfu

It is the northernmost of the Ionian Islands and the closest to the Italian coast.

It stands out for the green color of the nature that surrounds it, full of olive trees, dreamy coves and beaches of fine white sand.

Perfect for lovers of the sun, the sea and tranquility.

Rhodes and Crete

The first is the furthest from Greece and the closest to Turkey.

Its medieval historic center, with more than two thousand years, and its paradisiacal beaches attract thousands of tourists every year.

It is large, with more than 100 km of distance from north to south, so there is a lot to explore, including the archaeological site of Kamiros or the city of Lindos.

Crete

is the largest of the Greek islands, located south of the Aegean Sea.

Cradle of important ancient civilizations, this place is home to a great historical and archaeological heritage, such as Knossos, Phaistos and Malia.

It is mountainous and has gorges and caves, such as those in Samaria, as well as beautiful natural environments, such as the Balos lagoon.

Knossos Palace of Crete.
