The appeal trial of former President Chun Doo-hwan (90), who was convicted in the first trial on charges of defamation of the 5/18 party, began today (9th).

The trial was held today at 1:57 pm in the court of Gwangju District Court No.

Jeon arrived at the courthouse of the Gwangju District Court at 12:43 pm today and entered the courtroom with the support of security personnel.

He did not respond to reporters' questions, "Do you deny the firing order?" and "Are you willing to apologize to the citizens of Gwangju and their bereaved families?"

His wife, Soon-ja Lee, who requested to be present as a trusted person, also moved with him.

This is the first time that Jeon has appeared in an appeals trial, and it has been nine months since the first trial in November of last year.

In the first trial, he appeared in court on three occasions, including two accreditation interrogations and a sentencing date in March 2019 and April last year.

Jeon's side did not appear, saying, "According to the law, the trial can proceed even if the accused does not appear."

Today's trial will determine the scope of the examination of evidence and the adoption of witnesses.
