YouTube announced on Sunday that it had suspended Sky News Australia from its platform for a week because of false information on Covid-19.

The move follows an analysis of videos uploaded by the TV channel owned by media mogul Rupert Murdoch.

"We have clear policies established on false information on Covid-19 (...) in order to prevent the dissemination of false information about the coronavirus that can harm the real world," YouTube said in a statement.

Criticism of the extension of confinement

With 1.86 million subscribers on YouTube, the channel is followed by curators far beyond Australia.

His posts, some of which question the existence of a pandemic and the effectiveness of vaccines, are widely shared on social media around the world.

Three days ago, she published a column in which a host, known for his hostility to health restrictions, notably criticized the authorities' decision to extend confinement in Sydney.

Sky News has confirmed that it has been temporarily blocked by YouTube.

A spokesperson said the channel "supports discussions and debates on a wide variety of topics and points of view, which is vital for any democracy."

As a reminder, YouTube has three types of penalties for violations: the first is a one-week suspension, then two weeks for a repeat offense within 90 days and finally a permanent removal from the platform.
