From the first half of next year, identification will be possible only with a mobile phone without a physical resident registration card.

On the 28th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that it would promote a project to build a 'Resident Registration Card Mobile Verification Service' equipped with a function to verify the authenticity of identity such as name, resident registration number, address, and issuing agency.

This service is proposed to prevent the risk of personal information being misused or forged or falsified in case of loss of resident registration card and to improve the inconvenience of having to carry the real ID at all times.

In addition, as the security of mobile phones has greatly improved with the development of information and communication technology, it is also a dimension to accommodate the public demand for convenient identification using mobile devices.

The biggest feature of the service is that it can be used only by registering the service without a separate issuance procedure, unlike the 'mobile ID', which stores personal information by issuing a resident registration card to the mobile phone.

Since the details of the resident registration card containing sensitive information are not stored separately on the mobile phone, there is no risk of personal information being leaked even if the mobile phone is lost.

After you go through the identity verification process at 'Government 24', you can receive an identification number (QR code), display and scan the details of your resident registration card on the screen, and use it to check the authenticity.

It is expected that the service will be available for receiving civil documents, issuing certificates, checking whether you are an adult in everyday life such as convenience stores or restaurants, and boarding airplanes and ships.

However, if the Act requires the presentation of a physical ID or stipulates that identification can be verified only through verification of the physical ID, the use of the service may be restricted.

The Ministry of Public Administration and Security is planning to establish a related system so that the service can be implemented from the first half of next year, and to promote the revision of the resident registration law to provide a legal basis.

This is a 'news pick'.
