Snapchat's growth continues.

The app had about 23 percent more users in the second quarter of this year compared to the same period a year ago.

In the second quarter, on balance, 13 million daily active Snapchat users were added.

A total of 293 million people now send temporarily visible video and photo messages to each other via the app, also known as 'snaps'.

Snapchat's popularity is partly due to all the visual effects you can add to those images, such as face filters.

Snapchat chief executive Evan Spiegel expects the number of users to rise even further as more lockdowns end, as the app is made to be used outdoors with friends.

New functions also play a role in the increase, according to Spiegel.

For example, it has recently been possible to record short videos via the app that can then go 'viral', just like with TikTok.

The company's revenue in the second quarter rose to $982.1 million (about 834 million euros), an increase of 116 percent compared to a year earlier.
