At least 11 people were killed when lightning struck people while taking selfies in a tourist destination in western India.



According to Indian media such as NDTV and Indian Express on the 12th, lightning struck the observatory near the Amer Fort, a historic site near Jaipur, western Rajasthan, on the afternoon of the previous day.



NDTV reported that the accident occurred when dozens of people, including tourists and residents, were gathering and taking selfies.



The observation tower was located on a hill opposite Amer Fort, a 12th-century site, and it was raining at the time of the accident.



Jaipur Police Chief Anand Srivastava said "11 people have been killed and 11-12 injured in the accident so far," Indian Express said.



Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted his condolences to the bereaved family.



The state government also decided to deliver a consolation money of 500,000 rupees (approximately 7.7 million won) to the bereaved family each.



In India, many people lose their lives in lightning strikes every year, especially in rural areas.



According to official statistics, 1,771 people were struck by lightning in India in the 2019-2020 fiscal year alone (each year starting in April).
