Independent lawmaker Lee Sang-jik was handed over to trial on charges of violating the Public Official Election Act in October last year.

At the time of the 21st general election, there are six charges such as sending text messages to induce duplicate voting by right party members during the internal primary election process and distributing traditional liquor and books to constituency residents.

Prosecutors demanded a three-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Lee.

Rep. Lee has denied the charges all along saying he did not know, but the judge's judgment was different.

The court of first instance sentenced Rep. Lee Sang-jik to one year and four months in prison and two years of probation.

It is the first case among the 21st National Assembly members to be sentenced to prison for violating the Public Official Election Act.

The court found that Rep. Lee systematically induced overlapping votes at the level of the election campaign.

He reprimanded them for undermining the will of the people and shaking the foundation of the electoral system.

In addition, he was also found guilty of donating traditional alcoholic beverages paid with Eastar Jet's corporate card to constituencies while serving as the chairman of the Small and Medium Venture Business Corporation.

The lawmaker's side did not make a separate statement, but it appears that they will appeal.
