A fine has been confirmed against the head of Gangnam Academy, who taught an American curriculum for over 10 million won a semester.



The 3rd division of the Supreme Court (Chief Justice Heung-gu Lee) announced today (14th) that it confirmed the lower court sentenced to a fine of 3 million won in the appeal of Mr. A, who was charged with violating the Elementary and Secondary Education Act.



In July 2018, Mr. A was tried on charges of opening an academy that taught the American curriculum from the 3rd grade of middle school to the 3rd grade of high school in Gangnam-gu, Seoul.



A was found to have taught English, mathematics, science, and a second foreign language for a tuition of 12 million won per semester.



Classes were held from 8:30 am to 3:10 pm, and after-school club activities were also held.



The first and second trials sentenced A to a fine of 3 million won, saying that Mr.



Mr. A claimed that his hagwon was merely a supplement to the existing education system, but the court did not accept this.



A appealed, but the Supreme Court dismissed it.
