It was belatedly known that the culprit of the sexual assault case in Jeju 20 years ago was handed over to trial a day before the statute of limitations expired through genetic (DNA) analysis.

According to the Jeju National Police Agency on the 11th, a woman in her 50s who broke into a house in Jeju in March 2001 and sexually assaulted A was charged with violating the Act on Punishment of Sexual Violence Crimes and Victim Protection, etc. for the first time in 20 years. was recently indicted.

At the time of the incident, the police launched an investigation, but there were no witnesses at the time and no CCTV was installed, so the suspect could not be identified.

At that time, the only evidence left by the suspect at the scene was a bundle of tissue paper with the suspect's semen.

Police found DNA presumed to belong to the suspect in semen on a wad of tissue paper, but could not identify a person who matched the DNA detected at the time.

In the end, one more unsolved case was added to the history of the Jeju police.

Then, in March 2019, 19 years later, suddenly progress was made in the investigation.

A DNA analysis result arrived at the Supreme Prosecutor's Office, and it was found that the DNA was identical to Mr. Han's DNA.

In May 2009, Han was sentenced to 18 years in prison and was serving a sentence in prison.

Mr. Han left Jeju in 2004 when the police investigation network was narrowed.

He was arrested in Incheon after committing a total of 183 additional crimes, including 18 sexual assaults and 165 violent crimes, in Incheon, Gyeonggi, and Seoul until 2009.

It was also confirmed that the first crime of Mr. Han, who was additionally charged through the DNA in the tissue, was another sexual assault case in Jeju in March 2001.

Seogwipo Police Station, who was in charge of the case, transferred Mr. Han, who was serving a sentence in another local prison, to the Jeju Penitentiary for further investigation and sent it to the prosecution with the opinion of indictment, and the Jeju District Prosecutor's Office indicted Mr.

He had his first trial on April 8.

He is known at trial, denying the charges and claiming that "someone put his DNA in a tissue and manipulated it."

An official from the Seogwipo Police Station said, "It would not have been easy for someone to put Han's semen on a tissue found at the victim's house and manipulate it."

The third trial against Mr. Han will be held on the afternoon of the 14th with officials from the National Forensic Service who analyzed the DNA of the tissue paper in attendance as witnesses.
