The European Union has announced an ambitious project that consists of the creation of a European Digital Identity framework through

an official app that will allow citizens of EU member states to virtually prove their identity

and carry out

different procedures with the public administrations

and private companies of the member states.

An initiative that large technology companies (manufacturers of mobile operating systems or large Internet companies) will be obliged to comply, according to the European Commission in a statement.

"

Very large platforms will be obliged to accept the use

of European digital identity wallets at the user's request."

In essence, the app will function as a virtual wallet promoted by the administration that will allow citizens to carry out different procedures such as requesting a bank loan, contracting supplies,

identifying themselves before the authorities by showing their DNI

or paying for public services.

An announcement that comes days after Spain has begun to deliver the new DNI model, which has an integrated chip that stores your photo, fingerprints and signature.

It will also be the first DNI that you will not need to physically carry

since citizens will be able to

include it in this European app

or in another one prepared by the Ministry of the Interior.

Although we still have to wait a year until this European app is available to download.

Community authorities are already highlighting

the possibilities it will offer

.

"It can be done in a secure and transparent way.

We can decide how much of our information we want to share, with whom and for what,

" said the executive vice president for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager.

The use of this application will

be voluntary

, as indicated by the EU, and will be available to all member states.

However, despite its optional nature, the EU indicates that it will allow widespread use "either

to identify users

, or to certify certain personal attributes when accessing public and private digital services throughout the Union."

The app

"will guarantee the control by the user of the data"

since "the European digital identity wallets will allow them to choose which aspects of their identity, data and certificates they share with third parties and keep abreast of what is done with them", they assure.

"This control by users," they promise, "ensures that only

information

that really should be shared is shared."

According to the Financial Times, the app will have a strong security system that will use the user's fingerprint or a

retina scan

as user authentication methods.

In parallel, the Commission has urged Member States to create "a common set of tools by September 2022

and immediately make the necessary preparations

" for its implementation.

Looking to the year 2030

This European Union initiative is part of a broader project and vision that seeks that "by 2030,

all key public services must be available online

, and all citizens will have access to electronic health records."

A date by which the EU estimates that

80% of the population will use

an electronic identification solution.
