Michael van Gerwen failed to reach the final of the Premier League Darts on Friday.

De Brabander lost in the semi-final battle in Milton Keynes 8-10 to Jonny Clayton, who also took the overall victory.

The 32-year-old Van Gerwen and the 14-year-old Clayton started the match excellently with finishes of 108 and 127 respectively. In the fifth leg the Welshman took care of the first break of the match, but his opponent immediately restored the balance.

After Clayton broke again, Van Gerwen impressively leveled the score by throwing out 140.

However, the three-time world champion lost the next two legs, leading him to enter the first break with a 4-6 deficit.

After the interruption, Van Gerwen recovered and won three legs in a row.

Then the battle went on, until the Dutchman lost his own leg at a score of 8-8.

Clayton no longer relinquished that lead and decided the match with a finish of 121.

Van Gerwen recorded an average of 101.97 per three arrows, compared to 103.25 for Clayton.

On the doubles he came to a slightly lower percentage than 'The Ferret': 57.14 to 62.5 percent.

Clayton beats De Sousa in final

In the final, Clayton was 11-5 too strong for José de Sousa later in the evening, who had dealt with Nathan Aspinall in a thriller in the other semi-final: 10-9.

Clayton succeeds Glen Durrant, who stranded without points after the first phase this season.

In the regular phase, Van Gerwen finished first after sixteen rounds.

With that he earned a bonus of 25,000 British pounds (almost 29,000 euros).

Van Gerwen hoped to win the Premier League for the sixth time, after previous success in 2013, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019. Last year he failed to reach the play-offs for the first time in his career.
