What is the best electric bicycle?

And which one has the best price-quality ratio?

NU.nl and the Consumers' Association provide an answer.

Electric bicycles were already hugely popular, but due to the corona crisis, demand is greater than ever.

The advantage of an e-bike is, of course, that you can enjoy cycling without requiring a lot of effort.

Even with headwind.

You make cycling as hard as you want.

The Consumers' Association tests e-bikes for electrical support, range, operation and equipment, among other things.

A total of 334 electric bicycles have been tested that are reasonably to readily available.

Mainly due to the high demand as a result of the corona crisis, some e-bikes have temporarily longer delivery times.

A Cube electric bicycle came out Best in the Test.

More bikes came out as Best in Test, but this is the best tested bike with the lowest target price.

A good and slightly cheaper alternative is an e-bike from Kalkhoff.

Choose the best e-bike for you

This Cube bike is suitable for almost any type of use, from commuting to longer bike rides.

It has a powerful, quiet motor and it cycles very well.

Even uphill you can often cycle at a speed of about 25 kilometers per hour.

The battery has a considerable capacity with 625 Wh.

You can also often lower the assistance a bit, thanks to the powerful motor.

You can even reach more than 100 kilometers on 1 full battery charge.

The bicycle has a derailleur gear with 10 gears.

This shifts nicely sporty, but requires a little more maintenance than a hub gear or belt drive.

The chain guard on a derailleur is open, making maintenance easier than with a closed case.

Despite its sporty properties, this bike is also comfortable.

This is partly due to the front fork suspension, seat post suspension and extra wide tires of 55 mm.

A disadvantage is that there is no lock on the bike as standard.

The supplied charger is also a bit slow.

It takes about nine hours to fully charge the battery.

Choose the best e-bike for you

Is it enough for a model with a slightly lighter battery?

Then the Kalkhoff is a great choice.

This bicycle from Kalkhoff has the same powerful motor as the Cube.

But then with a somewhat lighter battery of 400 Wh, which is reflected in the price.

Just like the Cube, it cycles very well, but you can make shorter trips with it.

Just like the Cube, the Kalkhoff has a derailleur gear that shifts sporty.

You have to make do with eight gears instead of ten.

The comfort of the bike is good.

It has front fork suspension and wide tires of 47 millimeters.

It has no seat post suspension.

A disadvantage is that the display is quite simple in design.

You also cannot take it off the bike to prevent theft.

In this column we write weekly about household and technological appliances that have been tested by the Consumers' Association.

This is a collaboration between the independent editors of NU.nl and the Consumers' Association.

The Consumers' Association tests thousands of products every year, together with qualified technicians in specialized laboratories at home and abroad.

The products being tested are bought in the store so that they are not pre-manipulated by manufacturers.

New models are tested as soon as possible after introduction. How fast that is differs per product. The Best in Test is the product with the best test rating. This can also be a somewhat older model, because a newer model is not always better. The Best Buy is the product with the best price-quality ratio.
