▲ Private repeater confiscated by the police

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's newly established'Voice Phishing Intensive Response Team' conducted intensive crackdowns and confiscated about 160 private repeaters used in voice phishing crimes.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency announced today (21st) that it had intensively cracked down from the 16th of last month to the 10th of this month, detecting and removing 161 private repeaters from 52 locations across the country.

The police also confiscated 203 sim chips used in the crime, 7 home cameras, 25 cannon phones, and 1 laptop.

A private repeater is used to make it look like a domestic number such as '010' by altering the display number of an Internet call originating from abroad.

The police arrested one person who installed and managed private repeaters and collected cash on charges of violating the Telecommunications Business Act or fraud.

In addition, 12 people involved in the installation were enlisted.

It was investigated that the voice phishing organization sought a place to install a repeater, saying that it would pay 150,000 to 200,000 won a month if the machine was installed in a residence or vacant room after advertising such as'Internet Monitoring Side Job' or'Recruitment for part-time jobs at home'.

Choi Jong-hyuk, head of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency's investigation manager, said, "Recently, there are more cases of being investigated after installing a private repeater at home in the name of a part-time job because it may be used for a voice phishing crime. I asked.

The Seoul Police Agency has a policy of selecting combating voice phishing as a key task this year and taking intensive responses.

In November of last year, the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency formed an intensive response team that acts as a control tower, and established a collaboration system that collects and investigates cases that were individually investigated at front line police stations, and collects and analyzes crime data.

In addition, we plan to break away from the existing investigation method focused on arresting criminals, and focus on preventing crimes in advance by collaborating with related organizations such as telecommunications companies and banks whenever voice phishing crimes occur.
