Thousands of websites were affected Wednesday by major disruptions after a spectacular fire that ravaged the night in Strasbourg of "data centers" of the company OVHcloud, some customers now fear the permanent loss of data.

This fire and the power cut that accompanied it had repercussions far beyond French borders, reminding users that data hosted in the digital cloud (cloud) is physically stored in “data centers” and therefore vulnerable. .

Thousands of customers impacted

All morning long, very diverse structures such as the French bitcoin trading specialist Coinhouse, the Center Pompidou, or the public data access platform data.gouv.fr reported disruptions, sometimes only temporary, in access to their websites or the use of emails.

In total, 12,000 to 16,000 customers were impacted according to OVH.

Some have reported permanent data loss, such as the British video game studio Facepunch, publisher of Rust.

"We are now studying the replacement of affected servers," OVH announced on Twitter.

“The data cannot be restored”.

OVHcloud nevertheless indicated that it was unable to confirm any definitive losses: depending on the backups or redundancies subscribed, "there are as many possibilities as there are customers", the company said.

The latter said it had initiated an inventory of the damage, after its technical teams received permission to enter the damaged premises in the afternoon.

In the meantime, OVHcloud has recommended its customers to initiate their “Disaster Recovery Plan” if their data is hosted in Strasbourg.
