On January 13, 1991, the storming of the Vilnius television center by Soviet security forces took place. Historians call it the culminating moment in the confrontation between supporters and opponents of Lithuania's secession from the USSR. As a result of these events, 14 people were killed and hundreds were injured. There are no unambiguous assessments as to who is responsible for the deaths of people. The Lithuanian authorities blame the Union leadership for this, but many eyewitnesses and experts say that Soviet servicemen did not use live ammunition that day and did not try to harm the participants in the mass actions. Subsequently, a number of lawsuits were held in Lithuania against Soviet politicians and security officials, which were criticized by the Russian Foreign Ministry and Russian law enforcement agencies.
