Amid the strong cold that froze the Korean Peninsula last week, there were many accidents, especially vehicles using diesel.

Even at minus 17 degrees Celsius, the diesel was frozen, so the car that was running suddenly stopped, and it led to another accident.

Reporter Jin Ki-hoon of CJB reported.

<Reporter> The

truck that followed the white truck that stopped on the shoulder of the highway hits it.

The accident occurred at around 8:40 am on the 9th.

At the time, the white truck was stopped on the shoulder when the fuel was frozen and the car was in a collision accident.

A day ago, there was also a fatal accident.

A truck driver in her 40s, when the car broke down due to freezing of fuel, pulled up on the shoulder, came out and was hit by a truck that followed to melt the fuel tank.

For three days from the 8th, when a record cold wave hit, more than 200 vehicle breakdowns have occurred due to freezing of diesel fuel only in the Chungbuk section of the highway.

[Soo-young Cho/Director of Mechanization Team, Chungbuk Headquarters of Korea Expressway Corporation: In such a cold weather, diesel vehicles freeze like porridge, so you cannot have

diesel

as a fuel line (engine).]

Diesel has a higher freezing point than gasoline and starts to freeze at minus 17 degrees Celsius. .

If the fuel freezes inside the fuel filter, the engine cannot be supplied with fuel, and the engine is turned off.

Especially in the case of trucks, the fuel tank and fuel filter are located outside the vehicle, so freezing may occur more easily.

[Shin Heung-seop/Vehicle Industry Manager: We recommend replacing the (engine filter) once a year and before winter season. This (freezing) occurs more often when low-cost fuels are used.] If

a cold wave below -15 degrees Celsius is expected, injecting a freeze inhibitor to reduce the freezing point of the fuel is also a way to prevent accidents.
