Windows 7 is still installed on millions of computers -

On January 14, 2020, Microsoft drew a line on its operating system launched in 2009, Windows 7, by killing its technical support for this OS.

A major information campaign had been set up upstream in order to warn users, but also to encourage them to switch to a more recent operating system.

As the anniversary of the end of technical support for Windows 7 approaches, time has come to take stock: the OS is still installed on more than 100 million computers.

The point is, stopping Windows 7 tech support means that the OS will no longer receive an update and security patch.

In other words, if new security vulnerabilities are discovered, they can be easily exploited by hackers.

Microsoft will not be offering a fix.

However, the OS is still functional.

It is therefore quite possible to continue surfing Windows 7 and use the programs installed on your machine.

It should also be noted that Windows 7 is used more than Windows 8 and 8.1.

In December 2020, 8.5% of users were still running Windows 7, compared to 3.4% for Windows 8 and 8.1.

As for Windows 10, it has 87.8% of users.

Users still attached to Windows 7

The presence of Windows 7 on more than 100 million computers can easily be explained by several elements.

The first is that switching to Windows 10 is now paying, not all users are necessarily willing to spend more than a hundred euros to change the operating system.

Not all users are also necessarily comfortable with the migration procedure (we explain how to proceed here).

Very popular with businesses, Windows 7 still has to be used a lot today.

Migrating all of a company's computers to Windows 10 may represent too much for some organizations.

The incompatibility of certain programs can cause companies to stay on the obsolete version of Windows, as can force of habit.

Finally, the fact that many electoral machines run under this OS can also explain the presence of Windows 7 on many computers.

Microsoft had also announced that it would finally continue technical support for Windows 7 machines in the United States due to the 2020 presidential elections.

With the new year, we can expect fewer and fewer machines to run Windows 7 since technical support will definitely no longer be provided for computers dedicated to elections.

However, ordinary users, small businesses and administrations could still keep their machine under this OS for a while.
