Google will shut down Android Things -

Geeko

When it was launched, Android Things seemed promising, the connected objects market was indeed booming.

But over the past four years, the OS made in Google for the connected home has never really managed to find its place in the sector.

Android Things is about to join the long list of projects subscribed by Google.

The Mountain View firm has just announced the upcoming closure of its OS for connected speakers, routers and other security cameras.

An announcement that we could expect since Android Things has been left out by Google for almost two years.

The shutdown of the OS will take effect sometime next year.

The countdown has begun

Already from January 5, 2021, Google will no longer accept new non-commercial projects integrating Android Things.

The American firm gives developers a year to migrate their connected products to other solutions.

As of January 5, 2022, the OS “will be completely deactivated and all project data will be permanently deleted”.

Fortunately, this announcement only concerns a very small number of connected objects, proof that Android Things was far from being a success in the Internet of Things market.
