Earlier this year, the government announced that the number of people killed by industrial accidents fell the most in 20 years.

However, there are many voices that the government statistics cannot properly explain our labor reality.

This is reporter Sangmin Kim.

<Reporter> The

Ministry of Employment and Labor promoted that the number of deaths in industrial accidents last year decreased significantly compared to the previous year.

[Lee Jae-gap/Minister of Employment and Labor: The number of deaths in industrial accidents in 2019 was 855, down 11.8% or 116 people from the previous year...

.] The number

of deaths caught in the statistics is those covered by workers' compensation insurance, but 144 more people died while working than the Ministry of Labor announced.

This is because workers who are compensated according to other laws, such as the Public Officials Accident Compensation Act, not the Workers' Compensation Insurance Act, are in the statistics.

Park Mo, in his 50s, who died as a pick-up official at a post office in Gyeonggi-do during the Lunar New Year holiday last year, was also missing in statistics from the Ministry of Labor.

This is because they are not eligible for industrial accident insurance because they are public servants.

Although the number of deaths per 10,000 workers is 16, which is 15 times the number of deaths in general industrial accidents, fishing crews are certainly workers, but they are subject to accident compensation for fishing crews, so they are not captured in the statistics of industrial accidents.

[Hyun-cheol Ryu/Director of Korea Labor and Labor Health Research Institute: It is difficult to manage undisclosed risks.

There are cases in which (disaster) management cannot be addressed in the forum of public opinion and how it can be reduced.

It is pointed out that there is a need for'comprehensive statistics' covering more workers by collecting related statistics scattered in Lee Cham.

[Yong Hye-in / Member of the Basic Income Party: Comprehensive statistics on labor accidents including public officials and fishing crew members are required.

The government's willingness to come up with hidden industrial accident countermeasures (must be supported.)] The

system needs to be improved so that some of the workers who die while working in the workplace because they are not workers under the Labor Standards Act are not excluded even in statistics.
