  • Analysis LG Velvet, LG's imperfect return to the high-end mobile range

  • Analysis. This is the Xiaomi Mi 10t Pro: the best mobile for its price?

At a time when high-end phones are jack, horse and king, LG stands out with the card of changing the direction of the UNO, a swamp of the Magic and the six double of the domino: the LG WING.

With two screens that are both a screen and a half and a gimball functionality, as insane as it is surprisingly functional, it has the daunting task of justifying its format and its

1,099 euros

of price.

Before talking about the elephant pacing the room with its deployable trunk, some context.

LG WING is the company's first Explorer project terminal, which is focused on creating somewhat more extravagant devices, technologies and ideas that may become part of the higher and more sensible range of its catalog.

Hence the screen.

If in other phones the screen is one more point to analyze, in the WING it is at the same time a component and the nucleus around which the entire mobile orbit.

By rotating the 6.8-inch main panel 90 degrees, a 3.9-inch secondary panel appears that works as a second screen in some applications or as an additional and miniature one for multitasking.

Why?

The only answer that can be given is another question and someone at LG must have asked it: why not?

At the moment the list of optimized applications is quite limited (so much so that the company did not even want to give an approximate figure in its presentation in Spain).

This is a problem, because it does not seem that it will be a best-selling phone either, so the catalog will hardly increase.

Of course, what there is is good and it takes advantage of the additional space in an intelligent way, especially the stabilizer to record video;

a weapon that Chekhov will wield later.

The good news is that, otherwise, the additional screen works perfectly.

Watching a series with Twitter open or using the browser with Spotify next to it is

easy to set up, practical and runs smoothly

.

With time and use, new combinations are discovered that may make more or less sense, but they will always be displayed fluently.

Although there is a function that allows you to place shortcuts on the main screen, the easiest way to activate multitasking is to rotate it, without compassion, warning or fireworks.

This simplicity

is a success

.

For its part, the miniature version does require that the applications that will appear in it be selected.

It is also appreciated, because looking for a needle in a 3.9-inch haystack and 200 apps would be very annoying, so it is better to reduce the harvest.

Although the mechanism to move the main screen is robust - anyone who does not know the secrets of the WING will think that it is a normal phone and LG ensures that it holds 200,000 openings - it moves easily and without the need to hold the mobile with two hands.

Doing it in public will generate amazement, conversation and explanation.

Yes, it is impressive.

No, I don't know what it's for either.

Design

If we ignore the frivolity of the screen flip, the WING is a sober and elegant phone;

without eccentricities.

The rear houses a bulky triple camera that appears as a small mound in a dark glass body.

The other back, meanwhile, has a rough and matte finish that contrasts with the rest of the body.

In order not to be a device made to be upside down when the screen changes places, the result is very careful.

In this sense, it would seem that LG has wanted to remind us that

we should not take it as a joke

and that it is worth the 1,099 euros it costs.

What may be paradoxical actually makes a lot of sense.

Had it been released in the mid-2000s, WING would appear in a video for the Black Eyed Peas, the American Pie edition that played that summer, and would be used by Bam Margera at Tony Hawk's Underground 2. Now a phone is worth more than the SMI, so better to go to the soda in an experiment that already has a nitroglycerin body.

Also included in the box are some screen protectors and a case that follows the same lines of seriousness and subtlety: it is a phone that would come out of the pocket of a business suit.

The lock and volume buttons are located on the right side, where it is possible to reach them with one hand, but not easy.

The fingerprint reader, which is located under the screen, also requires some practice due to the size and thickness of its body.

However, once we have it located it will work quickly the first time.

260 grams that do not give much

What is undeniable is that the WING is deep and as the minutes go by with it in hand, its 260 grams becomes a quarter of a kilo.

Watching a series, whether with the screen unfolded or folded, ends up being uncomfortable.

Unfortunately, the weight and size do not hand in hand with free space for the best components: the dual display

requires sacrifices

.

The 4,000 mAh battery does what it can with the extra hours of work involved in shining an extra 3.9 inches and barely reaches the end of the day.

No matter how identified one feels with this collapsing on the sofa when arriving home, the truth is that now that we begin to glimpse a day and a half -or two days- of use in the high range, it entails starting at a disadvantage compared to the competition.

You don't play with autonomy.

Perhaps aware of this, or simply because it is what we play in 2020, LG has added fast charging, a band-aid that for many will be more than enough to cover the stab of running out of enough battery to listen to music on the way home.

Where LG is to be applauded is in the

performance

aspect

.

Although its Snapdragon 765G processor and its 8 GB of RAM (storage has 128) could seem fair for its price, the experience is very satisfactory, without jumps and with the fluidity that is expected from a terminal of these characteristics.

This feeling is transferred to the double screen, which can be navigated with several tabs open while Cobra Kai students break their spines on a Netflix that runs full blast on the main one.

Multitasking may not always be around, but it will use its moments of glory to shine.

A special camera

THE LG WING has three cameras on the back: the main one (64 megapixels), a 12 megapixel wide angle and another 13 wide angle. The front, 32, appears from the top of the device, because on a phone like this we did not expect otherwise.

In general, the performance of all of them is correct, especially when the light is good.

Again, it may not be as good as the competition, but it does have enough quality not to be out of place.

By now we know that the WING is going to mushrooms, not to Rolex.

Now, it is sliding the screen - which is how the

gimball

is activated

- and the phone suddenly

has no rival

: the best recording with stabilization is in the craziest mobile of recent years.

And, as if that were not enough, in this function the two screens make sense, both for their functions and for the way of holding it.

It remains to be seen whether whoever dares to get hold of a WING will dare to record action scenes in which the phone will be the most in danger, which will hardly get up as if it were not a fall.

Although, to be honest, few phones can boast of John McClane's stamina.

The LG WING is like

a Dada masterpiece

: nothing makes sense and that is precisely why it works.

Now, as with the current, it is not for everyone.

And less for more than 1,000 euros.

As if two screens were not enough, until the end of November LG

will give away

a 49-inch television to those who buy one of these phones.

Those who are already served in this aspect and do not finish seeing it clearly may not embark on the adventure, so WING will have a difficult fight to gain a foothold in the market.

On the other side of the ring, the iPhone 12, Galaxy Note 20, OnePlus 8T or Xiaomi Mi 10t Pro, among others.

LG appears in combat wearing a Goku costume, diving goggles, and Sailor Moon's lunar scepter.

He may lose the fight on points, but he will do it with a proposal so special that the hearts he wins

will be his forever

.
