Former President Lee Myung-bak, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison on charges of embezzlement and bribery, was imprisoned again.

Former President Lee departed from his home in Nonhyeon-dong, Seoul at around 1:46 pm today (2nd) in a black Genesis vehicle and arrived at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office around 2 pm.

After going through the procedures for about 10 minutes, including identification and notice of execution, I was transferred to the Eastern Detention Center in Seoul in a car provided by the prosecution.

On February 25, he was re-jailed after 251 days after he was released due to the suspension of execution of the Seoul High Court.

Dongbu Detention Center, located in the Legal Town of Munjeong-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul, was the place where former President Lee was imprisoned for about a year until he was arrested and released on bail on March 22, 2018.

The eastern detention center is built as a state-of-the-art facility with 12 stories above the ground, and is considered one of the newest detention centers nationwide.

Former President Lee is expected to be assigned a living room on the 12th floor of the Eastern Detention Center as in the previous imprisonment, considering the courtesy of the former president.

The 12th floor is a mixture of single and mixed living rooms, and correctional authorities plan to install a blocking facility to keep other prisoners out of access.

The living room alone is 13.07㎡ (3.95 pyeong) including toilets, which is slightly larger than the living room (10.08㎡ · 3.04 pyeong) of the Seoul Detention Center where former President Park Geun-hye was imprisoned.

The room is equipped with TVs, mirrors, bedding such as futons and mattresses, table and desk, lockers, sinks, cleaning supplies, etc., as in general prisoners, and a dedicated guard is designated in consideration of cases of acceptance by the former president.

On this day, former President Lee will undergo the same procedures as general inmates, such as physical examination, removal of belongings, and taking pictures of prison records (aka mugshots).

The imprisonment of former President Lee in the Eastern Detention Center seems to have taken into account the circumstances in which former President Park was imprisoned in the Seoul Detention Center and the two former presidents could not be placed in one place due to the burden of security, etc.

The convicted prisoner whose sentence was confirmed stays in the detention center and is transferred to the prison after classifying the inmates.

Former President Lee was sentenced to 17 years in prison, but he was imprisoned in a detention center for about a year during the previous investigation and trial, and the remaining imprisonment period is about 16 years.

If he meets his sentence, he will be released in 2036 at the age of 95.
