During a lecture last year, former Yonsei University professor Ryu Seok-chun, who created controversy by referring to the Japanese military comfort women as'a type of prostitution', was handed over to trial for defamation.
In a lecture last September, Prof. Ryu remarked in a lecture on the purport of ``the grandmothers of Japanese military comfort women voluntarily became comfort women to engage in prostitution'' and ``Educated comfort women grandmothers to testify as if Jung Dae-hyup was forcibly mobilized by the Japanese military''. He is accused of defaming the Japanese military comfort women victims and officials in Eui-yeon.
Earlier in October of last year, the Justice Memory Solidarity, an organization that supports comfort women victims, sued former Prof. Ryu to the Western District Prosecutor's Office for defamation.
The prosecution said it would make every effort to maintain prosecution and respond strictly to defamation crimes that inflict serious mental pain on victims.
