Although Apple has drawn the line on the AirPower - the wireless charging cradle presented in 2017 and officially discontinued in 2019 - the company is not completely uninterested in this type of charger.

It also proved it during its last keynote by presenting a brand new wireless charger based on MagSafe technology.

A charger inherited from the MacBook Pro

This technology is not new to Apple.

It was indeed presented for the first time by the American firm in 2006, when the first MacBook Pro was announced.

Its particularity was that the charger connector did not fit into a port, but was clipped using a magnetic block.

This made it possible to avoid sending your computer waltz if you accidentally pulled on the charging wire.

The MagSafe charger is indeed quite easily detached when pulled.

During its existence, the MagSafe connector has undergone several evolutions - T and L shaped - and is experiencing one more today in its version for iPhone.

A charger inspired by that of the Apple Watch

The MagSafe wireless connector does not clip into the Lightning port or the like, but simply slides under the iPhone.

Thanks to a magnetic zone integrated into the smartphone, the connector does not move once it is connected.

It's hard not to see a resemblance in this MagSafe charger with the charging cradle of the Apple Watch.

They are indeed both round, although the iPhone's is a bit larger.

Two MagSafe charger models

The firm presented two models of MagSafe chargers.

The first is a simple round stand that slides under the iPhone and the second, the MagSafe Duo, has a second charging area for a second device.

It will therefore be possible to charge both your smartphone and your connected watch, a bit like the AirPower was supposed to do.

It will also be noted that the base folds up on itself, so as to take up less space in a bag.

Unfortunately, Apple has not yet given a launch date for these two new products.

The MagSafe Duo is not even posted on its site yet.

We do not know its selling price either, unlike the simple MagSafe which will be marketed at 45 euros at a still unknown date.

Apple has also indicated that it is working on a MagSafe socket, as well as some sort of iPhone / Apple Watch MagSafe door, without further clarification.

In all cases, the “basic” MagSafe charger will offer a maximum power of 15W.

Note also that the MagSafe charger is compatible with all iPhones with induction charging.

The beginning of the end of the Lightning port?

The introduction of this new type of charger reignites the rumor that Apple is considering getting rid of the Lightning port on iPhone.

A rumor that has been running for some time now and which would allow Apple to offer completely sealed iPhones.

If the Cupertino company is indeed heading in this direction, there is a good chance that it will attract the wrath of some consumers since they could not interchange their cable to recharge their iPhone.

But it wouldn't be the first time Apple has come under fire.
