After a year of research on global warming, the largest expedition to the North Pole returned to Germany on Monday.

"I have a heartbeat, I have waited so long for this moment," said Director of Operations Antje Boetius on the occasion of this historic moment.

The largest scientific expedition ever to the North Pole has returned to Bremerhaven in northwestern Germany after a year of research into global warming, the German Alfred-Wegener Institute announced on Monday.

The Polarstern icebreaker "is back. I have a heartbeat, I have waited so long for this moment," said Antje Boetius, director of the institute, as the ship returned to its home port accompanied a fleet of boats and a morning audience on the quays.
