The independent supervisory board that Facebook announced last year will actually sit just before the US election, council member Alan Rusbridger said Thursday.

The council should have been active last year.

However, the process was delayed by the coronavirus, Facebook said.

The supervisory board is there for users of Facebook and Instagram who do not agree with the removal of a message.

The intention is for the council to remain completely independent and to test messages against Facebook's regulations.

The council may also advise on policy.

According to Rusbridger, the council will be active from mid-October.

He says he does not know whether matters about US President Donald Trump will be discussed.
