Twitter announced on Thursday its new rules for moderating messages during election periods.

These will come into force on September 17, with the approach of the presidential election in the United States.

On its blog, the social network details what is in fact a hardening of the already existing regulation.

Until then, Twitter had fought against content likely to discourage voters from voting, fake news on the voting system or even false affiliations.

Avoiding Trump Announcement Effects

Twitter will now report or delete messages containing "information intended to undermine confidence in an election or any civic device."

Among the latter are "unverified information evoking rigged elections but also falsification of the ballot, counting of votes or official results".

The social network quotes for example "the announcement of a victory before the official proclamation of the results".

According to a Twitter spokesperson interviewed by

Politico

, the new rules will apply everywhere and to all users.

Politico

sees it as an anticipation of Donald Trump's possible reaction on presidential election day.

The current US president said in August that "they can only take this election by rigging the votes."

The previous month, he had tweeted that the 2020 poll would be "the most FRAUDULENT and BIAISED election in history."
