An 18-year-old driver lost control of his car on Wednesday night in Nancy.

"According to the first witnesses heard on the spot, (the driver) was traveling at low speed" when he left his lane and, "for an unexplained reason for the time", ended his trajectory in the terrace of 'a bar, according to the prosecutor. 

A young 18-year-old driver lost control of his car Wednesday evening in Nancy and mowed down several people on the terrace of a cafe, leaving six injured, including one serious, we learned Thursday from corroborating sources.

The accident occurred around 10:20 p.m., in the center of Nancy, deputy public prosecutor Stéphane Javet told AFP.

"According to the first witnesses heard on the spot, (the driver) was traveling at low speed" when he left his lane and, "for an unexplained reason for the time", ended his trajectory in the terrace of 'a bar.

"Alone in" his car, he told investigators "to have lost control of his vehicle", he added.

Six clients were injured, according to the prosecutor and a police source.

"One client, who was said to have been partly under the vehicle, presented an open fracture of the tibia" while the five other victims, "slightly injured", suffered from "ankle pain for the most part" and, for one of them, "wounds in the thigh" caused "by shards of glass", according to the magistrate.

Permit holder for a few days

Several people put the vehicle on its side in order to free the victim injured in the leg, said Stéphane Javet.

According to the police source, the driver had held a driving license for just a few days.

He was taken into custody.

The tests did not show any use of alcohol or narcotics and his criminal record "bears no mention", according to the prosecutor. 

An investigation has been opened for "unintentional injuries by driver with willful breach of an obligation of safety or caution," he added.
