Google Maps: a complete overhaul of the display - Geeko

The Mountain View firm continues to make improvements to its mapping application. This time around, it's not a new feature, but a visual overhaul. An even more faithful representation of reality, especially in natural environments.

To rethink its maps, the Mountain View firm relied on satellite imagery and applied “a new algorithmic color mapping technique”. The result is impressive. One can better appreciate the diversity of nature, from snow-capped peaks to dense forests, through green fields and sandy beaches.

Streets, but also sidewalks

The more sophisticated and realistic rendering in Maps also applies to streets. Google has indeed redesigned its maps to take into account the specificities of the streets of certain large cities, including New York, San Francisco and London.

When the next Maps update rolls out, users will be able to distinguish streets from sidewalks, but also crosswalks and pedestrian islands. Google also indicates that this new representation is at the scale of the streets.

Maps's new visual overhaul will be rolled out this week in all 220 countries where the app is available. As for the new street design, we'll have to wait until next month. Other cities should benefit from more faithful representation in the coming months.
