Ofcom, the country's telecommunications regulatory authority, has just published its Media Nations 2020 report and reveals that the time spent in front of the screens by the British - adults - increased by 31% in April, in full containment , compared to 2019.

The share of waking hours spent in front of a screen has thus increased to 40%, reports The Independent . At the height of the crisis, when restrictions were tightest, Britons spent 6 hours and 25 minutes a day watching television as well as watching videos on the Internet or playing video games. These activities represented 5:53 a.m. last year.

Streaming platforms are popular

To kill the boredom, consumers have used streaming services in particular. They spent an hour and 11 a day, 37 minutes more than last year. These SVOD platforms have also won many customers: over 12 million subscribers, including 3 million for whom it was the first time. The platforms with the most new registrations are Netflix and Amazon Prime Video, followed by Disney +, Now TV and Apple TV +.

Their use should be sustained as 55% of Britons have indicated that they will keep their subscription and spend as much time watching streaming videos.

Public channels still watched

However, the public audiovisual channels have not been shunned. Last March, they achieved their largest audience share for six years.

They were notably watched by the public to follow the evolution of the health crisis. Eight in ten Britons said at the start of the lockdown that mainstream news channels were reliable sources for following the news.
