TVE received several criticisms on social networks last Friday, July 31, after its 15:00 news bulletin. Ana Blanco started the news program talking about the collapse of the Spanish economy in the second quarter of 2020, with the Gross Domestic Product falling by 18.5%.

Later it showed a controversial graphic that did not go unnoticed by the audience. It noted that GDP had fallen 2.6% in 2009 after the economic crisis. At almost the same height, the descent of 2020 appeared despite the fact that the figure was very different.

The presenter explained: " We are going to see in this graph the evolution of the economy in recent years, starting in the period just before the previous economic crisis began. We stop at one of the data, that of 2009. Then the fall of the economy it was 2.6% ".

Blanco continued indicating: "Little by little the evolution of the curve leads us to 2014 with different data. There the economy begins to rise and we see the first notable drop in the first quarter of 2020, 5.2%, a collapse that has exceeded all expectations in this second quarter, it was 18.5% ... This entry into the recession in Spain is due to the fall in investment, economic activity, imports and also the consumption of homes. "

Chart correction

Hours later, TVE corrected the graph. The 9:00 pm Newscast returned to the issue of GDP and showed its evolution in recent years on a scale that was not truncated.

The presenter Ana Roldán pointed out: "We can see how the fall of the curve is dizzying. We show it to you with the correct proportion , which due to an error that we regret we have not shown you in the 15.00 news bulletin."

Reactions in the networks

Some tweeters accused TVE of manipulation for their way of illustrating the drop in GDP on the Newscast . "Was there no more screen? Can't it be done correctly? Childish tricks?" Wrote one user. There were those who compared the commented graphic that was seen in La 1 with the one taught by Vicente Vallés in Antena 3 Noticias .

The rectification was applauded by some viewers, but others were not satisfied with it and argued that it was not a mistake. One user stated: "The manipulation of the TVE graph has been so extensive and has circulated so much that they have had no other choice but to muddle through and try to appear half objective."

Some people shared a common publication by the account Twitter of RTVE also was questioned and subsequently corrected. In it several graphs appeared representing the quarterly falls in GDP in France, Spain, Germany and Italy. The bars seemed to indicate that the values were very similar, but each country had a different scale.
