Microsoft is negotiating with TikTok's parent company Bytedance about a possible takeover of the US arm of the popular video app TikTok. That write, among others, The New York Times and Fox Business Friday.
TikTok's Chinese parent company, Bytedance, is also said to be discussing an acquisition with other companies. The company has owned the app since 2017.
According to Bloomberg , US President Donald Trump wants to force Bytedance to sell the app. In a few days he would come with an order.
The app has been under pressure in several countries, including the US, for some time. The app may share information with the Chinese government and store private data of Americans. An acquisition could ensure that China no longer has any influence on the app.
Trump's chief of staff, Mark Meadows, announced last month that he will investigate the security risks of TikTok, among others. A decision on the app's survival in the US should be made within weeks.
Microsoft and TikTok have not yet responded substantively to the negotiations.
