Ecosia, the search engine that helps plant trees around the world, wants to be usable on Android. Its creators have joined the ranks to participate in the auction to designate the three alternative search engines that will be offered alongside Google Chrome, when configuring a device, reports Numerama . The winners of these auctions will be chosen next September.

Google has set up these auctions since the start of 2020, under pressure from the European Commission. The institution sees in the attitude of the American giant a desire to arrogate to itself the monopoly when setting up an Android account, by offering only its only software. The American giant agreed last year that four search engines be offered.

Abused by the Covid-19 crisis

Ecosia, which uses its profits to plant trees thanks to research carried out by Internet users, had no plans to participate in the auction. But the German company behind the search engine suffered from the Covid-19 crisis, losing "1.2 million euros between February and June". "It is therefore essential to protect the visibility of the brand so that [it] can continue to invest in tree planting projects", specifies the company.

However, the firm did not specify whether it would participate in all of the auctions. To cover the European continent, Google is organizing an auction in the 28 member countries of the European Union, and three others in Iceland, Norway and Liechtenstein. Six have already won auctions for the period July 1 to September 1. DuckDuckGo and Info.com won a spot in all 31 countries. GMX, PrivacyWall, Seznam and Qwant shared the rest of the places.
