Thousands of databases erased by hackers - geeko

It seems that databases stored on insecure remote servers are the new target of a particularly vicious group of hackers. Researcher Bob Diachenko has identified a large-scale cyberattack campaign targeting databases stored unprotected in the cloud. This erases all the information contained in the databases and leaves behind only a simple “Meow” as a business card.

According to researcher Bob Diachenko, the Meow cyberattack would have no other mission than to harm businesses. No ransom demand is indeed sent to the victims. The only reason for this cyberattack campaign would be to demonstrate how easy it is to break into them and do whatever you want with them, according to the researcher. “I think that in most [of the latest cyberattack cases], the malicious actors behind the attacks are acting just for fun, because they can and because it's really easy to do,” says the researcher. "This is therefore a new alarm signal for industry and companies that ignore cyberhygiene, and lose their data and that of their customers in the blink of an eye," he warns.

Pure nuisance

The UFO company which publishes a VPN has also paid the price since sensitive data concerning its users have quite simply disappeared; passwords, IP address, geotags and other data have been deleted. More than a thousand databases were thus emptied of their content. And this figure should not stop growing according to the researcher.

The latter hopes that this particularly vicious attack will still have a positive aspect and push companies to secure their databases stored in the cloud. While hackers can delete all of the data stored on unsecured bases, they can also retrieve and exploit that information to harm people.
