It has been found that Jeju International School has recruited foreign faculty members without checking the history of sexual crimes in the past 10 years since its opening in 2011.

The Jeju Provincial Office of Education confirmed yesterday (16th) that during the investigation of 1,300 faculty members at various levels of international schools in Jeju City of English Education, recruited service workers with alleged sexual offenses were hired. He said that he has canceled.

Jeju English Education City is a national core project promoted by the government and Jeju Free International City in Daejeong-eup, Seogwipo-si, to absorb the demand for studying abroad and strengthen international competitiveness in education. Currently, 4 international schools are in operation, and 3,600 students are enrolled in elementary, middle, and high school.

However, as a recent incident of sexual crimes by foreign teachers in international schools occurred, it turned out that there were blind spots in hiring teachers.

Since 2013, in accordance with the Act on the Protection of Sex for Children and Youth, schools, schools, and child welfare facilities in Jeju Island have implemented the'Sex Offender Employment Restriction System'. This is a system that prevents children or youth-related organizations from being operated or employed for up to 10 years if they have been sentenced to punishment or treatment for sexual crimes.

However, international schools were not included in the target institutions as they were subject to the'Special Act for the Establishment of Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and the Creation of an International Free City' rather than the public education border. Moreover, unlike ordinary schools, the Ministry of Education has no authority to conduct'audit', so even in the event of an unfortunate incident, it was difficult to understand the details.

In the meantime, last year, a 30-year-old teacher of American nationality was prosecuted for nine times of sexual harassment against four victims under the age of 13, and was sentenced to two years and six months in jail for two years in prison. Recently, even a 40-year-old physical education teacher from Mauritius is being tried and charged with forcing three preschoolers during a yoga class.

In the end, the international school took action late in May, registering as a sex offender employment limit agency and conducting a teacher training survey according to the recommendations of the Jeju Island Office of Education, but it is unlikely to avoid criticism from parents and public opinion.
