Summer is coming and although these are likely to be the strangest vacations of our lives, there is a companion with whom we will repeat the trip, the mobile phone. Long days in the pool, the mountains or in a green area of the city, moments when you run out of battery and not be able to play your favorite music (to believe that you are in a video clip) or upload a photo of your legs tanning in the sun they are inconceivable. Also for more useful uses such as using the GPS or hunting Pokémon it is important not to run out of battery in the phone.

So, to avoid being immersed in the nightmare of being without a smartphone, having to listen to the sound of birds, see the nature around you and other unpleasant things, we have compiled a series of tricks to take care of the battery of your mobile and squeeze it the maximum possible.

It seems that eons have passed since those phones with back cover that allowed to change the battery comfortably. This allowed to replace a very used battery that no longer supports the rates of use as in the beginning. Now the interior is a Tetris calculated to the millimeter to which the user, in principle, does not have access, so we discard the trick of buying a new battery. In addition this involves an investment of money and as enthusiasts of savings, let's call it looking for efficiency at the minimum cost, this option is left out.

Slow down battery degradation

We start with the key option, keeping the youth of the battery as long as possible. The perfect anti-wrinkle cream for terminals is to decrease the number of charging cycles. Every time the phone is fully charged, the battery degrades in this process called the charge cycle. The number of charge cycles that the battery can support without much degradation depends on each model, manufacturer and capacity of the battery.

The general estimate is 20% degradation after 400 charge cycles. Let's do the math, we charge the phone on average once a day, a year has 365 days, so after a year and a month, approximately, the battery can only store 80% of the energy it had at the factory.

Sticking to this information, the objective is to amortize the loads more, stretching the moment of having to plug in the mobile. To get the battery to last us a day and a half, something that in the long run would greatly increase its useful life by following the previous calculation, we have different options.

Reduce brightness

It seems like a no-brainer, but how many times have you dazzled those in the back in the cinema by unlocking the mobile screen to check that it was silent, something as annoying as crossing a car with long lights on at night.

Adjusting the brightness manually on the phone will dramatically reduce battery usage, as well as setting the lock time to a minimum, preventing the screen from staying on longer than necessary. It should be noted that although mobiles have an 'auto-brightness' option but since it is managed by a sensor that detects ambient light, a process that consumes battery power, the best option is to do it by hand.

Dispense with connections and applications

This step is becoming more complicated as we use wearables such as smart watches or bluetooth headphones, but if your mobile is over a year old and you don't want to run out of battery outside the home, you may have to do without some of these accessories or use wired helmets.

The ideal would be to disconnect Bluetooth, NFC and Wifi if we are not using them, since keeping these functions active, without being connected to a network or device, will consume the battery in the process of constantly looking for where to connect.

In addition, closing applications that remain active in the background will increase the hours of battery life, saving both energy and data. A process that we must do manually, since the Android system understands that if we close all the apps at once, the RAM memory runs out of programs to run, being a waste of resources. The system's response is to keep some apps in the background so that you don't have to reload them completely when they are going to be used, that's why we must be the ones who decide to snip those apps.

Use the correct charger

Losing the charger in the middle of a vacation probably translates into arranging the first charger that we see in a flea market to charge the mobile. Keep in mind that many white label chargers lack certain security systems that protect terminals from fluctuations and electrical surges. They may also not be equipped to supply the correct voltage to the phone. The result is permanent damage to the charging port and battery.

Avoid overheating

Avoid using the terminal while it is charging to avoid overheating. The explanation is that during charging there is a transfer of thermal energy from the charger to the phone, a verifiable heat to the touch that is amplified if we also keep our hand around, remember that the average temperature of the human body is 36.6 degrees. The same happens when we leave it plugged in after charging the battery at 100%, the terminal stops charging but the thermal transfer continues.

Not leaving the phone in the sun is another no-brainer that you forget after putting your first foot on the beach or the pool. If the ground burns us when walking without flip flops, imagine what it will do on the mobile phone. Modern lithium ion batteries contain fluids that work through chemical reactions to power the components of the phone. With extreme heat, the liquid inside starts to evaporate and this can damage the internal structure of the battery.

If the mobile phone remains under fire, the first aid is to turn it off to avoid damage and to find a cool and dark place to recover.
