Twitter has announced the suspension of more than 50 white supremacist accounts for breaching the social network's policies against violent extremism.

"The accounts in question were suspended for violating our policies regarding violent extremism ," said a Twitter spokesperson, confirming information released by NBC News.

The move came days after the publication of a report by the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) that claimed that propaganda driven by the white supremacist network Generation Identity is "rampant" on Twitter and YouTube. .

"At this point, it is well accepted that white supremacism is as important a threat to internationally generate terrorist acts of massive lethality as other forms of extremism," the report concluded.

"However, there is a double standard when it comes to how online platforms treat content produced by white supremacists compared to content by extremist Islamic groups such as IS [Islamic States] or Al Qaida."

The GPAHE investigation found 67 Twitter accounts for Generation Identity cells in 14 countries with nearly 140,000 followers.

That count did not include individual "identity" accounts such as unofficial leader Martin Sellner , who heads an Austrian cell, according to the nonprofit.

On YouTube, the GPAHE found at least 12 countries represented by 31 Generation Identity cells with approximately 86,000 subscribers, the report said.

The GPAHE argued that the Generation Identity propaganda has "inspired" half a dozen massive attacks since the end of 2018, including those carried out at the mosque in Christchurch , New Zealand.

The propaganda includes white people who are allegedly being replaced in their home countries by immigrants , according to the report.

"It would be inconceivable for social media platforms to allow IS propaganda to spread and grow uncontrollably, but that is exactly what is happening with 'identitarianism', the ideology that underpins Generation Indentity ," the report said.

Twitter suspended the accounts for violating its policy against terrorist organizations or violent extremists who affiliate or promote their "illegal activities," according to the San Francisco-based company.
