A fire in a building in central Paris left one dead, an elderly woman, two seriously injured and ten more lightly affected, on the night of Friday to Saturday, told AFP a spokesman for the firefighters.

130 firefighters mobilized

The fire broke out for a cause still unknown "shortly before midnight" in an apartment on the third floor of a building at 10 avenue des Ternes, in the 17th arrondissement in Paris, said Captain Florian Lointier. An elderly woman living on the fourth floor could not be saved by the firefighters, of whom some 130 intervened on the spot.

18 people were saved

The fire, circumscribed after approximately 1:30, released thick smoke and made the stairwell completely impassable. Eighteen people were however saved thanks to ladders deployed along the facade from the interior courtyard of the building, explained Captain Lointier. An investigation was opened and the laboratory of the Paris prefecture of police went to the site to determine the causes of this incident.
