He's the new social media star. Mary Joe Laupp, alias "TikTok Grandma", has just joined the Biden Digital Coalition, a group of activist democratic internet specialists, supporting American presidential candidate Joe Biden.
The 51-year-old woman posted a video on TikTok on June 12 to call social media users to book tickets for and not to attend Donald Trump's campaign meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She wanted to prevent supporters of Donald Trump from obtaining seats for this event and, moreover, to leave part of the room empty.
"Operation" supported by many K-pop fans
During this meeting, on June 20, only 6,200 spectators were present, in a room that can accommodate more than 19,000 people and the images of empty rows went around the world. Hundreds of TikTok users then claimed that this failure was the result of the "TikTok Grandma" project, supported in particular by many fans of K-pop, the popular South Korean pop music in the world.
Mary Joe Laupp's original video had been viewed over 2.1 million times and received over 700,000 “likes”.
TikTok is increasingly invested by political activists
Mother of four and six times grandmother, Mary Joe Laupp told the New York Times that one of her first projects would be to create a political hype house, a group of content creators on TikTok who unite under the same name and often in the same place.
So far mainly a playground for pre-teens who posted short videos of themselves dancing, TikTok is increasingly invested by political activists and even candidates. By the end of April, the TikTok application had been downloaded more than two billion times.
