Technology and research have become the best allies to combat the current health crisis of Covid-19. Almost daily studies of different prestigious entities are allowing great advances in the fight against the coronavirus. However, so far little has been said about a silent, home-powered revolution that also copes with this pandemic.

For the past two months, more than 179,000 mobile phones of private clients around the world have been working interconnected and disinterestedly in search of possible solutions to this emergency situation.

These virtual volunteers, sponsored by the Imperial College of London and the Vodafone Foundation , give up daily the partial use of the processors of their smartphones to carry out billions of scientific calculations against the virus. Day and night together, under the umbrella of the DreamLab application , as if they were a large supercomputer in the style of the MareNostrum in Barcelona.

Originally an Australian app for scientific research projects against cancer, this application connects the terminals with Artificial Intelligence equipment. In this particular data crossing, possible combinations of drugs and food molecules with antiviral properties against the coronavirus are analyzed.

"In these tough times, Artificial Intelligence (AI) can go a long way. The DreamLab team is using the power of AI to detect approved drugs that may have the potential to fight Covid-19 and also to identify food components that allow us to increase our immunity against the effects of the virus ", highlights the professor of the prestigious Yale Public School of Health (YSPH), Vasilis Vasiliou.

The DreamLab app, along with several Android applications.

When activating the application, when we are charging the smartphone or if we authorize it to work in silence while we sleep, the gray mass of the terminal is incorporated into a network system also focused on shortening the deadlines of various scientific programs in phase 1. A task professional that usually extends for more than six months.

The app consumes minimal data, which in the case of Vodafone clients are free, but it never geolocates the terminal or uses personal user information such as photos or contacts. Her goal to beat has name and surname: Covid-19.

So far DreamLab has performed more than 18.1 million calculations, but it aims to reach 100 million operations.

In parallel, with this application you can also collaborate on six other research projects. From Italy Airc proposes the development of a personalized medicine for cancer patients. Instead, in Australia The Garvan Institute uses this method for the development of phenotypic patient information.

"We are using a novel class of network-based Artificial Intelligence methods to identify antiviral compounds among a data set of thousands of molecules. We have successfully used these methods to find superfoods containing compounds similar to anticancer drugs, and now we're updating them for the new disease, "says Chairman of Machine Learning and Pattern Recognition in the Computing Department at Imperial College London and head of Graph Learning Research on Twitter, Michael Bronstein.

This multinational research program also conducts studies on the rehabilitation of lung functions in those patients who have survived the virus, but now suffer from some type of respiratory sequelae.

What impression has DreamLab given us?

At PIXEL we have tested the DreamLab application for a few hours. The first thing we highlight is its informative menu that is very intuitive and easy to consult.

Its four large blocks with research projects are displayed quickly. However, its best asset lies in the usability of the application, which always puts the activity of the terminal owner before its main task of adding new calculations.

If the battery level is less than 80%, MediaLab never activates automatically. Additionally, the terminal must always be connected to the charger to take action against the Covid-19.

The app's data consumption can also be limited with 500MB packages or give you unlimited time when the app recognizes a WiFi network. It also allows its use if we travel to other countries, but previously the DreamLab Roaming function will have to be activated.

After 4 hours and 21 minutes of work on our mobile, the application reported that it used 4.45 MB and had carried out three scientific calculations. It may be symbolic, but it motivates the fact that we are contributing from our terminal to combat Covid-19.
