On June 18, 1880, a monument to the great Russian poet Alexander Pushkin was erected in Moscow. Funds for its construction were collected through a nationwide subscription, in which all classes of the empire took part: from peasants to members of the royal family. The opening of the monument, according to historians, was an event in the life of not only Moscow, but throughout Russia. The ceremony, in particular, was attended by Fedor Dostoevsky and Ivan Turgenev. Today, the monument is considered one of the most famous and recognizable sights of the Russian capital.
