According to Sky News, a research vessel sailed south from Tasmania, Australia, to take samples of bacteria that are in the air. However, the air was so clean that it barely had enough DNA for analysis.

“We were able to use bacteria in the air over the Southern Ocean as a diagnostic tool to determine the key properties of the lower atmosphere,” said study co-author Thomas Hill.

According to him, the particles that they investigated did not contain any impurities that would suggest that they came from outside the region.

“In general, this suggests that the Southern Ocean is one of the very few places on Earth that has been minimally affected by human activities,” Hill said.

Previously, scientists talked about studying the optical properties of Antarctic waters.
