iPhone 12: what we already know about Apple's next smartphone - Geeko

Slowly but surely, the release of the next big iPhone model seems to be approaching. After a new model of iPhone SE very convincing value for money, the iPhone 12 should be, unless major upheaval, the next Apple phone to be released this year. As with every Apple stamped product, rumors are rife about its design or the features and components it will carry. This is why we offer you a summary of these rumors, in order to see more clearly and to get the clearest idea possible on the next iPhone.

A very uncertain release date

With the current coronavirus crisis, it is the information that is most likely to vary. Indeed, Apple has got into the habit of announcing its new main smartphones in the middle of September, with a release one to two weeks later. Unfortunately, the pandemic and all the logistical problems it causes could well delay the release of the iPhone 12.

It would also seem, according to the Wall Street Journal , that his arrival is delayed by a month or even two, which would lead to the month of October or November. With Chinese factories idling for a few months now, it would not be surprising if this delay proved to be just.

Stable prices

Unless there is a big surprise, Apple should adopt the same pricing policy as for its previous models. In 2018, three different models were sold: the cheaper iPhone XR (859 euros), the iPhone XS (1,159 euros) and the iPhone XS Max (1,259 euros) which could climb to 1,659 euros in its configuration. more expensive. With the launch, a year later, of the number 11 range, the prices were essentially the same. The cheapest, the iPhone 11, was even sold for 50 euros cheaper (809 euros). It is hard to see Apple changing its policy this year for its models.

However, Apple may be able to adjust its prices due to the introduction of 5G. Most other manufacturers like Samsung and Huawei have also slightly increased the prices of their smartphones. Apple could follow suit this year.

Two, three… or four models?

For several years now, smartphone manufacturers have become accustomed to offering several iterations for their major new phone release. Apple is no exception to this rule. The iPhone XS was accompanied by the XS Max and the 11 came out with the 11 Pro and the 11 Pro Max. If the Cupertino company will more than likely adopt the same course of action, it is even rumored that a fourth model would be in the cards.

So should release the iPhone 12, the 12 Pro and the 12 Pro Max, but also the iPhone 12 Max. It would retain the characteristics of the basic model, but with an increased size and an obviously adapted price. We would therefore have 4 models, at different prices and sizes:

  • iPhone 12: 5.4 inch
  • iPhone 12 Max: 6.1 inches
  • iPhone 12 Pro: 6.1 inch
  • iPhone 12 Pro Max: 6.7 inches

Designed by Apple in California

We informed you a few weeks ago of a leak concerning the design of the next iPhone models. The notch should be reduced in size to allow the screen to cover even more space on the front panel.

By reducing the space between two components to the bare essentials within the notch, Apple would manage to reduce its size by 25% and therefore allow the screen to gain in area. In addition, the loudspeaker would therefore be embedded in the edge, in order to also allow space savings here.

Regarding the cover, the iPhone 12 should benefit from more angular matt aluminum edges. Recalling a certain iPhone 5, these edges should allow a better grip, iPhone X and later tending to slide quickly from the hands.

A high-end screen

Like its high-end predecessors, the iPhone 12 should benefit from an OLED screen. And this improvement should concern each model of this generation, and not the most expensive. Recall that OLED allows the smartphone a greater depth in colors and mainly blacks. Indeed, it no longer uses backlighting, which gives darker dark colors. It also helps preserve the battery.

In addition, the screen should be clocked at a frequency of 120 Hz. Allowing a more fluid display would be important for Apple, which had already opted for this type of display on the second generation iPad Pro. Without having ever dared to implement it in an iPhone, it could be finally the good year.

Four photo sensors

The iPhone 12 should not see its photo module greatly improved. The sensors should remain essentially the same, as in recent years. A stagnation which makes Apple fall significantly behind the competition, and in particular Huawei and the P40 Pro with its huge 50 megapixel 1 / 1.28 ″ sensor. The iPhone would remain for the time being with a standard 12 megapixel sensor of 1 / 2.55 ″, an ultra wide-angle of 12 megapixels and a 2x telephoto lens of 12 megapixels also. The iPhone 12 could be assigned a standard 60-megapixel sensor, but the tweezers are a precaution.

However, the LiDAR sensor may well land on the iPhone 12, or at least on its high-end models. Present on the latest iPad Pro, this sensor dedicated to augmented reality allows the smartphone to take into account the depth of the room. The goal ? Improve the experience with an augmented reality application and allow, with a photo in portrait mode, to have a more precise clipping between the front and the background.

Exit Lightning, hello USB-C?

This is a point on which there is no rumor. Introduced in 2012 with the iPhone 5, the 7th generation iPod Nano and the 5th generation iPod Touch, the Lightning port is today the universal charger for apple brand products. It is however regularly called into question, and in particular by the European Union which wishes a uniformity of the chargers, for the benefit of the USB-C. If Apple was not very fond of the idea of abandoning its home charger to USB-C, the 3rd generation iPad Pro was the very first to benefit from this connector. Would this be a first step?

If Apple refuses to switch to this new charging standard, another option remains possible. Many rumors spoke of an iPhone "all wireless", where even charging would be done from an induction base. This assumption is still unlikely, the consumer may not yet be ready to do without cables completely, as he had to do with the disappearance of the Jack port on the iPhone 8 and X.

The iPhone 12 should, in all likelihood, remain at the Lightning port. Apple is rather cautious when it comes to in-depth modification of its standard-bearer and should be based on its achievements.

Intrinsic features: 5G, A14…

In terms of  features , the iPhone 12 seems to have some new features on board. The latest rumor concerns Touch ID. According to the media Daily Economic News, Apple may choose to revert to its fingerprint recognition system, with a sensor below the screen. If it is obviously only a rumor, and that it is important to take it with tweezers, it is however almost proven that Apple has been working on this system for many years. It is also possible that this system is only available on high-end models of the vintage 2020, or that it only accompanies the iPhone 13, in 2021.

On the other hand, the fact that the iPhone 12 is finally equipped with 5G is almost a certainty. Many media agree to say that and Apple should finally catch up with the competition. Where we are not sure of anything, however, is whether this network capacity will be available only on the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max. It is also feared that this move to 5G will mean a price increase for Apple, which the competition should have done.

Our Smartphone folder

The chip that the new iPhone would ship should logically be called A14. After a very impressive A13 chip in terms of performance and low energy consumption, Apple should go even further this year. The new chipset made in Apple should push the power even further since it would be engraved in 5 nm. Performance would therefore be increased by 15%.

If all these rumors are the most likely, or at least the ones that come back with the most insistence, it is obviously better to wait for official announcements from Apple. For that, we will have to wait for the Californian firm to fix an appointment for us…
