President Donald Trump has extended the ban on the sale of Huawei and ZTE devices in the United States. A ban on suspicion of spying on the two companies on behalf of the Chinese government. The extension of the decree also prohibits US companies from using "telecommunications equipment manufactured by companies that pose a risk to national security," reports Reuters.

A decree which came into force in May 2019, but which has never been fully applied in practice. Several US companies have been able to obtain licenses to continue working with Huawei or ZTE, including some rural telecommunications operators that rely on Huawei hardware. The fifth stay should also expire very soon, May 15. There is no doubt that Washington grants a sixth stay to these companies.

Huawei stands firm

Huawei, for its part, has done rather well, despite the fact that it has been deprived of Google services for its phones. The Chinese manufacturer has developed several solutions including deploying HMS, an alternative to Google Web Services.

In 2019, Huawei managed to rise to second place among the manufacturers who sold the most smartphones, with more than 200 million units shipped.
